On The Eve of The Election, Business Leaders Unite in Call for a Safe & Accessible Election and to Ensure Every Vote is Counted

Major Business Associations & Small Business Owners Across the Country Encourage Civic And Business Leaders to Take Action to Protect the Freedom to Vote

WASHINGTON – On the eve of the election, business leaders from across the country are standing together to call for a safe and accessible election and urging patience while every vote is counted.

In the past few weeks, hundreds of small business owners and dozens of the country’s most significant business associations, spearheaded by Small Business for America’s Future and the Business & Democracy Initiative , issued open letters encouraging civic and business leaders to join efforts to protect the freedom to vote.

Support across the business community for our election system runs deep. Research from the Business & Democracy Initiative shows that over 80% of business leaders agree that businesses should act to ensure safe and fair elections.

WASHINGTON – This week, the Business and Democracy Initiative (BDI) hosted two briefings featuring former Treasury Secretary Robert E. Rubin and former American Express CEO and General Catalyst Chairman Ken Chenault discussing the critical role of businesses in protecting American democracy and implications for business owners - one event was national with over 700 registrants and the other was focused on Pennsylvania with over 300 registrants. These briefings build on BDI’s ongoing work that underscores how business leaders can lead by example and support a thriving democracy and economy.

“As business leaders, we understand the value of stability and trust—and this election is fundamentally a choice between chaos and stability for our country,” said Ken Chenault, Chairman of General Catalyst and former CEO of American Express. “The business community must continue to take a stand, recognizing that without a strong democracy, American business cannot thrive. This is not a political or partisan issue; it’s about upholding democratic principles that transcend party lines and sustain our economy and society. An Open Letter from Business Associations and Organizations on Support for a Safe and Secure Election Process

We, the undersigned business associations and organizations, urge our fellow business leaders to join us in supporting free and fair elections and standing up against attempts to undermine democracy. Threats and other attempts to engage in political violence have no place in a thriving American democracy.

We know first-hand that a vibrant and stable economy relies on a strong democracy. We recognize the importance of protecting the fundamental tenets of our democratic system during the 2024 election.

This election cycle, we as business associations and organizations will work with our colleagues and public officials to:

Support voter education and civic engagement
Publicly support safe, secure and accurate elections
Denounce threats of political violence, including against election administrators and workers
Ask all political leaders to agree to nonpartisan principles of fair elections, by complying with federal and state election laws and acknowledging the legitimacy of the outcomes after the results have been certified and courts have made final rulings

WASHINGTON – Last week, Public Private Strategies convened a salon dinner at Gravy Restaurant in Raleigh with 20 Triangle-based business owners, community and philanthropic leaders, and elected officials to discuss the landscape of democracy in North Carolina. Participants included members of the International Chamber of Commerce, the Golden LEAF Foundation, small business owners, and current and former elected officials. Public Private Strategies is a founding partner of the Business & Democracy Initiative , a partnership of business leaders dedicated to protecting our elections and rebuilding trust in democratic institutions. The dinner was hosted by Greg Hatem, Founder and Managing Partner of Empire Properties, who emphasized the critical role of the business community in engaging voters, encouraging civic participation, and countering misinformation and disinformation.

A recent poll from the Business & Democracy Initiative showed that the strong majority of business leaders say the existence of a well-functioning democracy is important to a strong economy, and that business leaders are more likely now than five years ago to take action to support democracy, like allowing employees to take time off from work to engage in the political process.

The dinner provided a platform for a dynamic exchange of ideas on how to address current challenges and leverage the strengths of the business community to support a vibrant democracy in North Carolina, looking ahead to this year’s critical elections and beyond.

Business Leaders Condemn Political Violence, Call for Peaceful Political Processes As Essential for American Democracy & Economy

WASHINGTON – In the wake of the assassination attempt on former President Trump at the rally in Butler, PA over the weekend, business leaders and organizations from across the country are coming together to condemn political violence and reaffirm their commitment to a peaceful and democratic political process as essential for the health of American society and the American economy.

A recent survey commissioned by Public Private Strategies revealed that businesses and consumers alike believe in the importance of a well-functioning democracy for a strong economy, with a significant majority supporting business involvement in the democratic process, and four in five business leaders agreeing that businesses should speak out about threats to democracy.

PHOENIX, AZ – This week, the Public Private Strategies Institute (PPSI) convened a virtual roundtable with 35 Arizona business leaders to discuss the current democracy landscape in Arizona. The roundtable featured Secretary of State Adrian Fontes, who emphasized the critical role of partnerships between the state and the business community to engage and educate voters, encourage civic participation, and counter misinformation and disinformation.

A recent poll showed that the strong majority of business leaders say the existence of a well-functioning democracy is important to a strong economy, and that business leaders are more likely now than five years ago to take action to support democracy, like allowing employees to take time off from work to engage in the political process.

The roundtable provided a platform for a dynamic exchange of ideas on how to address current challenges and leverage the strengths of the business community to support a vibrant democracy in Arizona.

Secretary Fontes emphasized the importance of addressing false claims and maintaining Arizona’s reputation. “We know there's no tangible proof of any significant problems with Arizona's elections. We know because that's what the data shows us. And yet there are still people out there who continue to make false claims, some of them elected by the system they criticize, and they're doing damage to our state’s reputation. Think about it from a business perspective: is that helpful? Especially when we've got a burgeoning semiconductor industry. We're dealing with a lot of big issues like water, education, workforce and our healthcare needs. Arizona’s reputation is something we really have to think about, which impacts the opportunities for Arizona's businesses. Help get more American voices engaged in the Democratic enterprise. That to me is where business leaders can also be community leaders.”

Monica Villalobos, President and CEO of the Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerc e who moderated the roundtable, stressed the importance of inclusive engagement. “Business owners play a vital role in protecting democracy by serving as a vehicle to disseminate truthful information on elections and actively discouraging misinformation.”

WASHINGTON – Yesterday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit moved to drastically weaken the Voting Rights Act. The ruling takes aim at the private right of action in Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, which has allowed citizens and civil organizations to bring suit against actions that limit access to voter participation based on race. If allowed to stand, the ruling represents a devastating rollback of voter protections in the United States, and could harm the ability of citizens to participate in our democracy and exercise their fundamental right to vote.

Protecting and strengthening our democracy requires year-round engagement. The fault lines in our democratic system aren’t just around electoral cycles–they’re every day that a state legislature works to roll back voting rights or the judiciary enables anti-democratic gerrymandering. As we approach the 2024 election, business leaders have a critical role to play in standing up for our democracy.

A well-functioning democracy is the cornerstone of a strong economy. However, growing and well-documented threats to our democracy are now creating a business environment marked by new risks–including restricted speech, retribution, and legal confusion.

It’s clear that corporate leaders are invested in our democratic future. Research from the Business & Democracy Initiative found that 96% of business leaders say the existence of a well-functioning democracy is important to a strong economy. Independent judiciaries and transparent legal systems provide vital stability and predictability for businesses, promoting competition and ensuring businesses operate on a level playing field. Freedom of speech and expression allows businesses to challenge the status quo, resulting in innovations that benefit consumers, drive economic growth, and promote job creation.

Another Jan. 6 must and can be prevented. Business leaders have the power to help uphold our democracy heading into 2024–and there are concrete steps they can and should take. Our power is grounded in the unique relationship of trust that we have with employees, customers, communities, and the American people at large. According to Edelman’s 2023 Trust Barometer , business is the world’s most trusted sector, and Gallup recently found that small business is the most trusted sector in the United States.

As we approach the 2024 elections, this trust makes business a critical conduit for delivering trustworthy information to employees and consumers. Business leaders can raise awareness about election risks with their employees and emphasize the importance of voting and civic engagement.

Employees have a strong desire to support democratic integrity. In response, it’s becoming the new norm to offer paid time off for employees to vote. Many companies are going beyond that crucial step to allow employees time to work polling places. And companies may be rewarded for this level of engagement, with nearly half (48%) of consumers saying they are more likely to buy a good or service from a business that allows employees to take time off from work to engage in the political process.

We can also use our trusted voices to support pro-democracy legislation at the state and federal levels. Business leaders were a key part of the coalition that came together to support the Electoral Count Reform Act, a key piece of legislation that slammed the door on a vulnerability in our democratic system that was weaponized in an attempt to overturn the 2020 election. Heading into 2024, there are other pro-democracy legislative efforts to protect voting rights and secure election infrastructure that business leaders can support, particularly at the state level.

Political giving is one of the most powerful levers that business leaders can use in supporting pro-democracy interests. In our electoral system, businesses and their employees are the biggest contributors to political candidates, PACs, and parties–and they must ensure their contributions are flowing to campaigns and causes that align with pro-democracy values.

Finally, business leaders can support accurate and open elections by providing resources and in-kind support for election administration and security infrastructure, including funding for election system stress tests, tech upgrades, and training.

The integrity of our democracy is not a partisan issue. A vibrant civil society and a well-functioning democracy ensure a wide range of perspectives from across the political spectrum are robustly represented. By opposing efforts that undermine democracy, business leaders will be standing for the rights of all people, of any party.

As state legislatures across the country work to roll back voting rights, the Freedom to Vote Act seeks to set national standards for voting access and election administration that promote fairness in our democracy and trust in our elections.

Milligan to preserve the Voting Rights Act’s protections against diluting the vote of racial minorities, by striking down Alabama’s recently redrawn congressional map aiming to dilute the vote of Black residents.

This election will determine the balance of power on Wisconsin's high court for the next several years. WASHINGTON, D.C.– Today, the U.S. Congress passed bipartisan legislation to reform the Electoral Count Act (ECA) of 1887 in an effort to protect democracy by ensuring safe and fair elections. Previously, business leaders and organizations have supported reforming the Electoral Count Act.

Research this year from the Business & Democracy Initiative and Morning Consult shows executives, directors, and small business owners overwhelmingly agree that a “well-functioning democracy is important to a strong economy” and 81% believe that “businesses should act to ensure safe and fair elections.”

In response to today’s vote, Business & Democracy Initiative co-founders, Daniella Ballou-Aares, CEO of the Leadership Now Project, and Rhett Buttle, Principal of Public Private Strategies, released the following statement:

The current law, the Electoral Count Act of 1887, allows a single congressman or senator to contest the results of a presidential election without any evidence. Rhett Buttle for Forbes: Strengthening Our Democracy Is Critical For Maintaining America’s Economic Competitiveness

All eyes are focused on the upcoming midterm elections and what issues will sway voters, but more of a focus should be on ensuring the stability of our democracy. A recent NYT/Sinema poll shows the voters are keenly aware of the challenge to our democracy, but economic woes continue to rank more important. Quite frankly, the two issues are linked.

The risks to the economy of a weakened democracy cannot be overstated. Unstable governments are considered likely to interfere in free markets and to be generally unsafe global investments. At best, interest rates would go up, making it significantly harder for businesses of all sizes to start and grow. If the United States’ ability to borrow money at low interest rates from creditors around the world is jeopardized, the effects could be disastrous.

While this is a complicated issue, there is work to do to reduce polarization and build consensus. Congress has the opportunity to make progress by passing a crucial piece of legislation. Regardless of the election outcome, the 117th Congress should not adjourn without passing legislation to modernize the Electoral Count Act of 1887, an effort which has garnered bipartisan support in both the House and Senate. This legislation does not target Republicans or Democrats; it targets those who would undermine our democracy and is essential to keeping our economy stable.

The 2020 presidential election and its aftermath pressure-tested our democratic institutions like no other modern election has done. Given how mistrust in our elections could destabilize the economy, the business community took unprecedented steps to endorse the legitimacy of the electoral results and condemn the January 6th insurrection that followed.

Business leaders, like the American public and consumers they serve, recognize that our democracy is fragile, with 83% indicating they are concerned about the health of the US democracy in recent polling. Perhaps more than others, we need them to recognize their ability to make sure we are on a path to rebuild trust in institutions that have allowed us to build the greatest economy on this planet. “The future of our republic relies upon effective election administration, public trust in the results, and the peaceful transfer of power — and so do our markets and businesses. Our country cannot afford a constitutional crisis,” said Sarah Bonk, the founder and CEO of Business for America.

Efforts to reverse the 2020 election and stop President Biden from taking office hinged on a last resort effort to force former Vice President Mike Pence to use the Electoral Count Act of 1887 to overturn the results. After close elections in 1880 and 1884, Congress passed this legislation to set an approval process for a state’s slate of electors. Yet under the law, just one Senator and one Representative objecting could force a vote on approving a state’s electoral votes. This approach has been used by both Republicans and Democrats in the past 20 years.

Fortunately, the January 6 insurrection failed and President Joe Biden was inaugurated two weeks later. However, still too many believe Biden’s victory was the result of voter fraud, and we are seeing more candidates being open to refusing to accept electoral defeat. In fact, 60% of Americans will have a candidate who questions the results of the 2020 election on their ballot this November.

“The aftermath of the 2020 election revealed significant ambiguities in our system for choosing the president that were too easily exploited to foment distrust and spur attempts to disrupt the lawful transition of power,” said Matthew Weil, associate director of the Bipartisan Policy Center's Democracy Project. “This bipartisan Senate framework is a critical step for shoring up vulnerabilities, protecting election workers, and improving the voting experience.”

The legislation moving through Congress would modernize the rules for counting electoral votes and clarify that the vice president does not have any power to solely accept or reject electors. It also increases the threshold to raise an objection to a state’s electors. This proposal has bipartisan support, including from such unlikely allies as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer [D-NY] and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell [R-KY], demonstrating its practical approach to modernizing the arcane 1887 law.

“It is common sense to modestly increase, as others have said here, the threshold for objections to the electoral count — so that Congress still has options in case of truly extraordinary circumstances, but we avoid an arms race where objections with almost no support paralyze the process every four years,” Sen. McConnell said when he announced his support.

The bottom line is that if the events of 2020 and early 2021 are repeated during a future election, our country and our economy will suffer. Business leaders should use their trusted voices in support of meaningful, pragmatic actions to safeguard democratic institutions. This legislation will not address all the threats we are currently facing, but it’s an important and timely step to avoid another catastrophic attempt to overturn a democratic election result. Congress can take an important step to protect our democracy and economy by passing legislation to modernize the Electoral Count Act.

Last Week, B&DI had the pleasure of hosting Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson for a virtual business leader briefing on the Promote the Vote Constitutional Amendment, which will appear on the November ballot in Michigan.

The briefing included information on the provisions of the Promote the Vote Amendment, including how the measure would ensure that voting is accessible to all Michiganders and tighten rules around election certification to ensure that election professionals are free to do their jobs without interference. Secretary Benson answered questions from Michigan business leaders and spoke about the importance of the proposed amendment.

Powerful Research From Business & Democracy Initiative Featured in Financial Times

WASHINGTON– As our democracy faces critical challenges, powerful research from the Business & Democracy Initiative continues to drive and inform the conversation around the business communities' engagement with and support for our democracy and democratic institutions.

Most recently, in an editorial for the Financial Times, Gillian Tett cited the Business & Democracy Initiative's research to make the incisive argument that “business leaders need to speak up for democracy.”

Are American business leaders ready to defend democracy? If you look at recent opinion polls, the answer might seem to be a resounding — and reassuring — “yes.”

Take a survey published in May by the Business & Democracy Initiative … this found that 96 per cent of business leaders think that “a well-functioning democracy is important to a strong economy” and 81 per cent agree that“businesses should act to ensure safe and fair elections.”

More striking still, 77 per cent “agree that businesses should speak out about threats to democracy.” And just over half of these leaders are more likely to encourage their staff to champion democracy and work in elections than they were five years ago. Only 8 per cent are less enthusiastic than before.

Let us fervently hope that the 96 per cent of companies who say that democracy is good for the economy are actually ready to defend it. Particularly given that these threats are likely to only mount; and that the Edelman Trust barometer shows that the public now has more faith in business leaders than politicians — by a big and widening margin.

Survey Shows Business Overwhelmingly Supports Action to Protect Democracy

WASHINGTON – Ahead of tonight’s hearings on the January 6th Insurrection, a new poll finds that business leaders are deeply concerned about the risks to American democracy.

The new research by Morning Consult on behalf of the Business & Democracy Initiative shows the business community wants to be active in protecting American democracy, and their customers will support them. The results show:

96% of business leaders say the existence of a well-functioning democracy is "important" to a strong economy.

80%+ of business leaders think that businesses should act to protect democracy and act to ensure safe and fair elections.

51%+ of business leaders say their business is more likely than they were five years ago to encourage employees to take a stance or speak out in support of democracy, or to take a public stance as a business.

64%+ of consumers say that a business with a public commitment to democracy shows the business cares about its customers, their employees, and has the right values.

In the aftermath of the January 6th insurrection, business leaders took unprecedented steps to condemn the attack and use their unique and powerful voice to support democratic institutions.

It has never been more important for businesses to step up to protect democracy and their ability to exercise their corporate values freely. Over the last year, there has been a rising trend of retaliation against companies like Walt Disney, when they have taken public stances that run counter to the views of the state’s elected leaders. There have been similar cases in states like Georgia and Texas . A troubling trend given that political retribution is a tool of autocrats, not leaders of the world’s proudest democracy.

The new research shows that business leaders are more determined than ever to protect American democracy, because a strong economy requires a strong democracy.

In today’s hyper-partisan and dysfunctional political climate, Wisconsin business leaders could be forgiven for turning off their news feeds and focusing only on growing and sustaining their companies and organizations in the face of inflation, and other persistent pandemic-era challenges.

This approach has worked for generations of Wisconsin business leaders, even during politically charged times. They trusted government officials to look out for the state’s prosperity and economic stability, and to safeguard our proud history of free, fair, and open government and elections.

But the world has changed and trust in government has eroded.

According to The 2022 Edelman Trust Barometer , the foremost annual global survey on trust, Americans no longer trust the government or the media and instead are increasingly looking to business to lead and drive stability. Almost one in two survey respondents (48%) viewed the government as a divisive force and viewed government leaders as the least trusted leaders in society today, with less than half of respondents (42%) indicating trust in elected officials).

Now that we know more is expected of us as business leaders, what exactly can we do?

How can we effectively engage in societal issues?

A seminal first step is to help restore trust and stability in our election process by creating and supporting policies within our organizations that encourage voter participation and civic engagement.

Wisconsin elections have some of the highest participation rates in the country. In the last presidential election, 76% of eligible voters cast their ballot. Despite the loud assertions of some, voter fraud has not been a problem in Wisconsin . Wisconsinites care about the direction of their state and they show up to vote. While we may have very different opinions, we believe enough in the legitimacy of our system to vote.

As the August primaries and November elections approach, let’s work to maximize participation in these elections. There are many specific actions business leaders can take, most of which do not require financial contributions or disruption to our businesses. Several strategies were outlined in a recent case study published by the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation, called “Civic Responsibility: The Power of Companies to Increase Voter Turnout” :

Promote National Voter Registration Day and Election Day on your company social media channels to drive awareness among your followers and provide a reminder for them to plan ahead and engage.

Host an in-office or virtual voter registration drive followed by election day events at work that help build support and positivity around voting.

Leverage your internal website and email communication channels to provide calendar reminders to employees on key registration and voting dates, and share local voting locations, hours and procedures ahead of time.

Provide employees time to vote. Open later, close early, make it a “no meeting” day or even provide the day off if you can. If we can do it for snow days, we can do it for democracy!

Become a champion for civic engagement by encouraging companies in your area or industry to drive similar initiatives, posting about your own civic engagement activities on LinkedIn, and speaking up in local business groups, including young professional groups, the next generation of leaders.

Prioritizing civic engagement and taking concrete actions to increase participation by providing employees time, information and support will be good for business and good for everyone. It allows us to stay true to our state’s core values and to move forward together.

We invite our area chambers, industry associations and business owners across the state to actively engage in driving high voter participation and civic engagement. Doing so ensures business plays a leadership role as a stabilizing force for Wisconsin.

The poll by a new initiative formed by three nonprofit organizations — Public Private Strategies, Leadership Now Project and the Black Economic Alliance — found that three-quarters of the more than 400 business leaders surveyed thought companies should influence democracy policy at both the state and federal levels. The survey was taken after the Disney uproar, which David Clunie of the Black Economic Alliance says has created a “very real” backlash against corporate America on weighing in on political issues. “We’re trying to create a space where retaliation is impossible,” Clunie said, adding that the point of the new initiative, called the Business and Democracy Initiative , is to bring companies together to be stronger in numbers."

On The Anniversary Of January 6, Business Leaders Should Advocate For Voting Rights And Democracy

The U.S. Capitol riots of January 6 showed how easily our country could be thrown into chaos through misinformation and unethical behavior by our elected officials. Unfortunately, as we look back on that day one year later, it is clear that millions of Americans and too many lawmakers did not heed the lessons from that watershed moment.

Today, threats to U.S. democracy continue due to concerted efforts to undermine faith in our elections through disinformation, state legislative attempts to make it harder to vote, and attacks on nonpartisan election officials. Free and fair elections are a hallmark of our democratic system and our economic stability. If our nation is thrown into political chaos every election cycle, the downstream effects will be felt by American business and Main Streets in communities across the country. Today, Public Private Strategies, the Leadership Now Project, and the Black Economic Alliance, in partnership with Morning Consult, released a new poll of 400 leaders and executives of America’s largest businesses. It found that 77% are worried about the state of U.S. democracy and 85% believe our form of capitalism is dependent on a well-functioning democracy.

Business owners, both big and small, and business leaders can play a huge role in dissipating this chaos and restoring trust in our elections. Here are five reasons business owners and leaders are effective voices for voting rights and democracy.

1. The business community helped increase confidence in the 2020 election

As then-President Trump promoted the Big Lie and pushed to overturn the 2020 election, the business community amplified its voice in declaring the electoral results legitimate. After the Capitol riots, more than 120 of the nation's largest companies stopped political contributions to politicians who voted against election certification. This type of leadership filled a void in keeping opportunistic lawmakers in check and giving Americans confidence in the 2020 election. Business leaders and groups today also reaffirmed their commitment to American democracy.

2. There are still challenges ahead

Despite this leadership, 2024 could be more contentious and many of the companies that had pledged to halt support have quietly resumed their giving. In addition, several states have passed and are considering legislation that would greatly restrict and suppress an individual’s right to vote. Georgia and Texas have received the most attention, but 47 restrictive voting bills have been passed in 22 states nationwide, with more expected in 2022. With continued misinformation about the 2020 election being pushed by media outlets and lawmakers, we could see more contested elections without supportive evidence. If we have another close presidential election and this time state legislatures award their electoral votes to the losing candidate, then the United States will no longer have a democratically elected government.

3. Instability and a fragile democracy are bad for business

One of the reasons aspiring entrepreneurs have a clear path for opening and expanding businesses in the U.S. is because this country is one of the most stable investments in the world. That can change if democracy and fair elections continue to be in peril. If what happened in 2020 becomes the norm, global investors will increasingly perceive the U.S. as a politically risky market and rating agencies like Fitch might consider downgrading the U.S.’s AAA credit rating as it did with Turkey, Brazil, and India. This would be in the same vein as defaulting on the national debt, jeopardizing our ability to borrow money at low interest rates and provide low-interest loans to businesses. It would also eliminate trillions of dollars of wealth and millions of jobs.

4. Business owners are trusted leaders in their communities and beyond

Business continues to be a trusted institution. Edelman’s 2021 Trust Barometer found that business is the world’s most trusted institution and Gallup’s latest polling found that small business is the most trusted institution in the United States. Business owners should capitalize on this goodwill by taking action to combat voter suppression in their states and use their collective voices to help create a national solution.

5. Voting rights legislation is a key first step to trust in elections

A key first step in making government work and restoring confidence in elections is through the passage of voting rights legislation. Our poll found that 77% support the Freedom to Vote Act (co-authored and co-sponsored by Senator Joe Manchin), which would address voter registration and voting access, election integrity and security, redistricting, and campaign finance. The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act would reinstate the U.S. Department of Justice preclearance of changes in state voting laws to ensure that local authorities do not pass discriminatory restrictions on voting, which was reauthorized on a bipartisan basis by Congress five times between 1970 and 2006. Our research shows that 73% of business decision makers think Congress should pass it. Business leaders should strongly consider voicing their support for both of these bills.

The aftermath of January 6 demonstrates why it is critical for business owners and leaders to reaffirm their commitment to stand by the legitimacy of America’s elections, which are foundational to our democracy and our economy. A strong democracy is an essential component of our free-enterprise system and a driver of enduring competitive advantage. The business community cannot afford to sit by and let that be squandered.

Ahead of the one-year anniversary of the January 6th insurrection, executives and decision makers voiced deep concern about the state of American democracy and its impact on the economy, and demonstrated support for passage of federal voting rights legislation.

Washington, D.C., Jan. 6, 2021— One year after rioters stormed the U.S. Capitol, encouraged by the efforts of political leaders to overturn the election, new polling shows the business community remains deeply concerned by the state of American democracy. A new poll conducted by Morning Consult for Public Private Strategies of 400 executives and decision makers of America’s largest businesses on the one-year anniversary of the Capitol insurrection showed that business leaders see a clear connection between the health of a well-functioning democracy and economic stability. The poll also demonstrated strong support among business leaders for passing federal legislation to protect and strengthen voting rights. Additionally, business leaders believe this legislation is important enough that the Senate should consider updating its rules to ensure solutions can pass.

“This research clearly shows that the leaders in America’s business community view democracy and voting rights as an economic issue,” said Rhett Buttle, Founder of Public Private Strategies and President of the Public Private Strategies Institute . “Now, it is important that advocates, policymakers, and leaders in Congress and the Administration engage the business community to advance solutions that will stabilize our democracy and protect access to the ballot for every voter.”

Specifically, the survey results show:

85% believe capitalism is dependent on a well-functioning democracy
72% believe America's democracy is currently being threatened, including 42% who say it's definitely being threatened
77% support the Freedom to Vote Act
73% support the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act
74% support amending Senate rules to pass voting rights legislation

“The most concerning aspect of Jan 6th, is that political leaders were calling for citizens to attack the capital and overturn the election,” said Daniella Ballou-Aares, CEO of the Leadership Now Project . “We need new voices and leadership to stand for election integrity and protect the systems put in place by our founders.”

Business-leader concerns about threats to democracy mirror those of Americans in general. A recent NPR/Ipsos poll finds that 64% of Americans believe U.S. democracy is "in crisis and at risk of failing." and a CBS poll shows 66% of Americans say democracy is threatened. Uniquely, the Morning Consult survey also shed light on who business leaders believe should have a role in upholding American democracy, including:
